Technology and therapy: couch and/or Skype?

Technology and therapy: couch and/or Skype?

This article, written in Dutch, reflects on the integration of technology into therapeutic practice, raising the question of whether digital contact forms such as online therapy via Skype complement or replace traditional face-to-face therapy.

Abstract

In the past, therapists were often hesitant to use technology in therapy. Many kept their distance from it and relied on tried-and-tested traditional methods. The COVID-19 pandemic, however, suddenly forced them to provide care to their clients online on a large scale, often through video consultations. There is an expectation that this rapid digitalisation of mental healthcare may mark a turning point for both therapists and clients. In the future, will we still discuss our deepest feelings in a private room, or from behind our computers? Or will everything return to the old ways? Both supporters and critics have valid arguments and concerns.
