The home nurse: an important partner in the community-based reform of mental healthcare

This article discusses the role of home nurses as partners in the community-based reform of mental healthcare in Flanders and their collaboration with psychologists and other healthcare professionals.

Abstract

Over the coming decade, Flanders is expected to see a sharp increase in the number of older adults: the group aged 65 and over will grow by about 20 percent to 1.35 million. Partly as a result, the past decade has also seen a steady rise in the number of people with chronic illnesses such as low back problems, allergies, high blood pressure, osteoarthritis, and neck problems. In 2008, around 28 percent of people in Flanders were affected by one of these conditions. These chronic illnesses, however, are associated not only with physical problems but also with psychological ones, especially depression. For this reason, the Research Centre for Welfare, Public Health and Family (SWVG) examined the possibility of involving primary healthcare professionals more closely in the early detection, referral, and care of people with psychological problems.
