Grenzen verleggen
This editorial, written in Dutch, reflects on the evolution of clinical psychology in times of digital transformation and emphasises the need for therapists to push boundaries in their professional practice.
Abstract
Innovation is a broad term, but it always refers to change. In mental healthcare, professionals sometimes view this with hesitation. When it comes to substantive innovation, people quickly think of major changes in legislation and policy, where a new approach or method is imposed from the top down with little room for input. Technological innovation, in turn, often raises fears of disruption: there are growing examples of sectors being fundamentally transformed by technology, such as online banking and online shopping. In mental healthcare, this is accompanied by a specific concern that personal contact between professional and client will fade into the background and be replaced by a tightly regulated, impersonal, and rather sterile approach. Such concerns are not entirely unjustified and are certainly part of the challenges professionals faced in 2017. At the same time, innovation also offers opportunities for improvement and progress. This special issue focuses on how change is currently taking shape within mental healthcare, what the challenges are for clinical psychologists, and what role they themselves are already playing in this process.
