Virtual and augmented reality exposure for anxiety-related problems in clinical practice: an overview of low-threshold options

This article in Dutch provides an overview of the possibilities of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) exposure for anxiety-related problems in clinical practice, with particular attention to low-threshold, affordable technologies that are feasible for the average therapist.

Abstract
Exposure is one of the most effective interventions for treating anxiety problems, but it remains underused in clinical practice. Virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) have proven to be effective, acceptable, and practical ways of delivering exposure, and may offer a solution to this underuse. Important barriers that clinicians still experience when using VR/AR are the cost and a lack of knowledge about the possibilities of hardware and software. This article therefore provides an overview of several accessible and budget-friendly VR/AR applications for exposure. We hope this will offer clinicians the necessary guidance when they want to use VR/AR in their treatments for anxiety problems.
